It's not doing that bad, it's just not doing as great as Zootopia and Frozen. I think it'll end up at ~$500M once it's out in all markets, which is a decent result.
My thoughts as to why it isn't smashing:
- As mentioned before, rather weak marketing
- Zootopia had the benefit of being about animals (which always does well in box offices) and having extremely good word-of-mouth marketing for its story/social themes
- Frozen got a mid-release bump with the success of its soundtrack
- Moana's songs just don't smash. I love How Far I'll Go, but it probably 20% of Let It Go's social reach at the moment. Frozen also had other viral songs like Do You Want to Build a Snowman, whereas Moana's other songs are kind of forgettable (including You're Welcome)
- No standout side character for merchandising. No Olaf, no Baymax, no Minions-type character. Makes it harder to advertise it to kids that way. The chicken is funny, but it's just a recurring joke with no lines. If the pig went with her on the journey, we'd probably see it everywhere.
- People get it confused with Lilo & Stitch.
- Honestly, Moana was a good movie - but I don't think it was anything to rave about. It was a very standard hero journey in the end. As a result, there's no word-of-mouth marketing boost since the majority of the audience isn't saying "you absolutely have to see this movie."
