Why do y'all insist on comparing Asian groups to Western groups? Outside of Asia, no one knows these groups. And yes, their success is phenomenal, but they're the exact definition of local.
Anyway, 5H is just a huge smoke n mirrors group. Another group "winning" be default. They can't sell albums, they can't tour, they can't rack up multiple hit singles. Smoke n mirrors. All they have is streaming. And barely that.

The majority of the population lives in Asia. Makes me think of those people thinking Africa is a country or something, TWICE is popular in most Asian countries how can they be local ? Can I say 5H is local to the english speaking countries/Western world ?

Asia is one continent. They're popular on one continent. Yet the others, Africa, Australia, S.A & N.A., and Europe don't know them. The parameters are unfair. The same way y'all call pop stars only famous in N.A. local is the same way I'm calling pop stars only known in Asia local. Asia's not better because they have more people. If that was the case, the majority of major pop stars and legends wouldn't be from countries outside of Asia.

You mean the majority of major pop stars and legends OUTSIDE OF ASIA wouldn't be from countries outside of Asia?
It's really naive and Eurocentric to think that Asia doesn't have its own 'major pop stars and legends' that we've never heard of in the West, just like I'm sure they've never heard of some of our 'major pop stars and legends' there.
Speaking of Asian legends, here's a Korean one who just made a comeback.

It's whatever. No one has still proven to me the logic in comparing Asian acts to Western acts, when you admit as whole, they have more people than all the other major music markets combined. With that being said, only one Asian country makes it in the top 10 of the world's largest music markets, and that's Japan. So, know its not naive. And yes, I'm sure they have their own legends, but you've missed the point. No one outside of Asia knows them and that can't be said for many U.K, Australian, European, and N.A. legends. Y'all ran around calling Taylor Swift local forever because the bulk of her sales and hits originate from one damn continent, which happens to be the biggest music market.

To sum up, I said what I said.
You know those rankings are heavily skewed towards Western countries?
It's difficult to calculate that information for Asian countries (such as 'communist' China hihi), so they end up being shafted and underrepresented.
You only need to look at the production value of a Korean Music Video and compare it to the average American MV to realise just how much money they make to be able to produce such expensive videos.
Also, last I checked South Korea was the fastest growing music market in the world ( +19.2% growth in 2015, +12.4% in 2016 - will soon overtake Canada & Australia, if it hasn't already) and is also in the top 10 of that IFPI ranking I presume you're referring to, so idk where you got that from.
One example that shows just how strong China's music industry is:
Big Bang selling more than 5 million albums there since 2015
idc abt Taylor Swift, I don't see how that's relevant to the conversation.
Here's one article talking about IFPI undervaluing Asian countries:
Quote:
KPMG’s figures place India’s music industry value for 2014 at 9.8bn Rupees .
That’s higher than the trade value estimate in the IFPI’s Recording Industry in Numbers 2015 – which pins India’s 2014 industry revenues at 6.1bn Rupees.
The IFPI’s biggest point of difference with KPMG/FICCI is that according to its trade numbers, India’s total recorded music market dropped 10.1% in the year. KPMG estimates that India grew 2.3% in 2014.

Again, you have kpop groups breaking concert arena sales records in South America, you have kpop groups selling out multiple dates at US arenas like Prudential Center, Honda Center, Rosemont, etc, you have SMTOWN who sold out Staples Center in 2010 and performed for thousands at MSG in 2011. None of which 5H has been able to do even though it's their home market. How is this local?

And no as of 2014, South Korea is now the 8th largest music market.
Why is this still going on? TT is better than any song from 5H. They sold more.
On what planet did they "sell more"? 7/27 outsold every Twice release, and both WFH and WI outsold every Twice single, despite Korean singles being half the price of US ones. 5H are more successful in every way than Twice

Well, it''s 63.4% of the world population, which is even more than half.
Why do you guys keep acting like Twice is popular throughout Asia? They're really only popular in certain eastern Asian countries. Here's a Google trends graph for which group out of Twice and 5H is bigger in each country since the date of Twice's debut.... 5H is actually bigger than Twice in most Asian countries

No, because they're not. They're very successful in Mexico and South America (eg 7/27 was #1 for 10 weeks in Brazil), they're big in Spain, WFH and WI were big throughout Europe, they have #1 hits in Israel and Lebanon... 5H are successful in every continent (except Antarctica), Twice wishes!

1. 'Twice' is only their English name.
2. 'Twice (Girl Group)' clearly doesn't count all of their searches, since 'Twice (search term)' rose from 57 to 100 when they released their last single TT, compared to 'Twice (Girl Group)' barely moving.
3. Most of Asia doesn't use Google + it's banned in their 2nd biggest market.

Using Google trends for assessing popularity in Asia While it's growing FAST the internet usage is only big in South Korea, Japan, and arguably China. But even then, Google is not the most popular research engine, and when it is Google doesn't have the same dominant position it has in Western countries.
Receipts :
The fact that I read "5H is bigger than TWICE in most Asian countries" You're bold !
Google counts all searches for the girl group Twice, including all different names.

"Barely moving"? It rises from 32 to 92 which is a much bigger % increase than 57 to 100.

Ok, but I don't see how that affects a comparison between two groups. You yourself have used Google Trends to try and "prove" that SNSD is the biggest girl group, yet as soon as it disadvantages K-Pop groups it's suddenly wildly inaccurate!!11

Again, I don't see how this affects a comparison between two groups within these Asian countries. And regardless, you can't deny that Twice is only big in a few Eastern Asian countries, rather than the entire Asian continent like some of you keep implying.

Well because you're using Google trends to claim 5H is more popular TWICE is popular in the entire Asian continent, bar the Middle East maybe.

oh my... do you know how graphs work?
'Twice (girl group)' is relative to the peak of 'twice (search term)'.
Of course it looks bigger if you zoom in on it.
The absolute increase is still significantly smaller.
'Google counts all searches for the girl group Twice, including all different names.'
More like 'Google TRIES to count all searches for the girl group Twice, including all different names.'
Um, I used Google Trends to show SNSD's popularity OUTSIDE of Asia, not IN Asia.
I literally still have the screenshot saved, so why twist the facts?
Google is mostly used by tourists in those countries, whilst domestic nationals are more likely to use a native search engine.
That's how it 'affects a comparison between two groups within these Asian countries'.

If you mean China this is false, I was living there until a year ago and still visit. It's just slower

Receipts? From what I've seen their success is limited to a few countries in eastern Asia.

Ok you're right, Google Trends is more inaccurate than I realised. But my point still stands that Twice are only popular in some countries in eastern Asia, and 5H are more popular in many parts of Asia.

Definition of 'Block'
verb
1. make the movement or flow in (a passage, pipe, road, etc.) difficult or impossible.
