Historically, the construction of ethics and various ethical systems and moral philosophies stemmed from theological/religious reasoning. Religion and ethics since the very beginning have always been tied to each other. There was virtually no distinction between the two. Religion was then called "moral philosophy." Heck, even science (which used to be called natural philosophy) and religion were one and the same, and many scientific/mathematical concepts such as atoms, algebra, geometry, etc., were rooted in religion and originally conceived through theological reasoning. Aristotle, himself, could have never conceived his virtue ethics from which all modern ethical systems branched out without his concept of God as an objective moral standard.

It is only rather recently (not occurring until the past 300 years) that people have found a way to divorce religion from morality (and science), and hardcore secularists are trying their best to erase their religious foundation.

I disagree. Homophobia stems from humans. Humans invented religion, and this invented the homophobic aspects of it. It would be unwise to say that whatever humans invented instead of religion wouldn't have those same homophobic aspects.

Okay, yes, humans invented religion and they invented those little books that people so solemnly believe in.... which have created homophobia.

Perhaps, but I don't think that whatever took the place of religion would necessarily be devoid of homophobia.

Humans are, by nature, inquisitive, questioning and obsessive. It stems from higher intellectual thinking. Religion was invented as a way to further those thought processes by trying to explain our existence. Something would have to have been created in its place were religion not invented.

The homophobic aspects of the texts came from the way people at the time thought about homosexuality. The best way to combat that is through education. Don't forget that, in the UK and US at least, the majority of people of most religious denominations believe in equality of the sexes and sexualities.
