The monitors face the audience. As someone who has performed on big stages, YES, it's true that the audience hears the song better than the person on stage, which is why they have the in-ears. In an arena/concert, you at least have the acoustics to help reverberate the sound. In the middle of Times Square you have nothing and hear chaos all around you.
