Pedro's Glorious 2016: The Best Singles (Part I)
The Gloriest Best Of 2016 is now among us.
Welcome.
Two out of three categories are a wrap and left to discover are the singles that ruled my year and I have to admit there were plenty... All of my main favorite acts released during this year and it was quite a challenge to rank them and determine who had better singles overall. Nonetheless, I am quite happy with my choices and hopefully you'll be too! We don't have much time though, do we?
Those were good... Just not amazing! I had mercy and allowed them to make a little appearance!
Almost Made It
100. Meghan Trainor - "Me Too"
99. Shawn Mendes - "Treat You Better"
98. Tinashe - "Company"
97. Alvaro Soler - "Sofia"
96. Melanie C - "Dear Life"

95. Charli XCX - "After The Afterparty (feat. Lil' Yachty)"
94. Jüri Pootsmann - "Play"
93. Jamie-Lee Kriewitz - "Ghost"
92. DNCE - "Cake By The Ocean"
91. Francesca Michielin - "No Degree of Separation"

90. Nelly Furtado - "Islands Of Me"
89. Martin Garrix - "In The Name Of Love (feat. Bebe Rexha)"
88. Ira Losco - "Walk On Water"
87. The Weeknd - "Starboy"
86. Lidia Isac - "Falling Stars"

85. Rihanna - "Love On The Brain"
84. IVAN - "Help You Fly"
83. Fergie - "M.I.L.F. $"
82. Agnete - "Icebreaker"
81. Hovi Star - "Made Of Stars"
80. Zara Larsson - "Ain't My Fault"
 |
We kick things off with Zara Larsson. While I appreciate some of her music (you'll see one more appearance from her later on), I don't find her that interesting. Her voice is not strong or unique, her dance moves are simply good and her songs could easily be sung by anyone else wich a decent voice. "Ain't My Fault" falls into that category even though it's catchy and a club banger! I love the beat and how fasts she sings before the chorus. "Ain't My Fault" obviously follows the hit formula by mixing urban and pop elements together with some modern days lyrics.
Could've stopped right now, even if I wanted. Gotta get it, get it, get it, while it's hot right now
1st of 2 appearances from Zara Larsson |
79. Taylor Swift - "New Romantics"
 |
I've never paid much attention to this song when "1989" was released but after it was released a single, I started appreciating it much more. I love how it is so uplifting and how the lyrics easily make you fall in love with it and make you want to actually fall in love! I love happy songs and this wouldn't be an exception. "New Romantics" gets some bonus points for being a Taylor Swift song - we don't get a happy song from her everyday, do we?
Baby, we're the new romantics. The best people in life are free.
1st of 2 appearances from Taylor Swift |
78. Tove Lo - "True Disaster"
 |
As you know (if you followed my album chart), this was the first time I was introduced to Tove Lo and I was very surprised. "True Disaster" is good but not amazing and given the quality of her album, I wish this hadn't become a single. Nonetheless, I still think the chorus is quite catchy and the pre-chorus can actually give you a lot of pleasure. I also love the lyrics of this song and how she is aware of what she is about to jump into but doesn't stop her from wanting what she wants... Quite inspirational!
I said come on, zero ****s about it. Come on, I know I'm gonna get hurt
1st of 2 appearances from Tove Lo |
77. Carly Rae Jepsen - "First Time"
 |
Carly Rae's EP "Emotion: Side B" slays pretty much everyone. Its quality is absurd and out of this world but then she releases as a first (and only) single this song? The weakest of the entire EP? Miss Jepsen... Explain this to me NOW! Don't get me wrong, though! I do love the song, it is very 80s, very catchy, very happy and very funky but why would anyone think this would work at all as a promotional single? Seeing it from the bright side, any other song from the EP would've been harder to rank!
We won't get too sentimental, not tonight. I could meet you in the middle, we won't fight.
1st and only appearance from Carly Rae Jepsen |
76. Noah Cyrus - "Make Me (Cry) [feat. Labrinth]"
 |
I was a bit reluctant on giving Noah a chance as I don't like when a brother or sister is given a chance in the industry only because of who they are related to - Miley in this case. Nonetheless, with such a title, I had to see if Britney would still win the title for the best "Make Me" and she did! Noah had a good try though! I love how alternative it is and how out of the box that teardrop is! On top of that, I find it so curious how her tone is so similar to Miley's!
I never needed you like I do right now, I never hated you like I do right now. 'Cause all you ever do is make me...
1st and only appearance from Noah Cyrus |
75. Major Lazer - "Cold Water (feat. Justin Bieber & MØ)"
 |
I remember when I used to say "Cold Water" was so much better than "Let Me Love You"... Guess I've changed my mind. This song was overplayed by radios, clubs, TV... On top of that, I had the opportunity of seeing Justin live and he performed an acoustic version of this which made me dislike it even more - dude can't sing. Either way, I do think it's a good song to have fun to and makes you feel happy and that's why I still like it and support it!
Everybody gets high sometimes, you know. What else can we do when we're feeling low?
1st and only appearance from Major Lazer
1st of 3 appearances from Justin Bieber
1st and only appearance from MØ |
74. Argo - "Utopian Land"
 |
Not even Eurovision fans are big fans of this track. It didn't even make the finals which is quite bad for a greek song but I love it and its greek influences, quite special. The chorus is my favourite part and it's what makes it so catchy and special but as I said this song isn't for everyone, you really need to like this type of musical influences and be open minded to new sounds.
We are the rise in the rising sun, dance with us and have some fun
1st of 8 appearances from Eurovision Song Contest Acts |
73. Lady Gaga - "Perfect Illusion"
 |
When I first heard "Perfect Illusion", I was surprised in a very wrong way. "What's up with all these screams?" Those were my first thoughts and I actually spend a long time without giving it a new chance but then I eventually did and it became better and better to the point I started enjoying it. Not as much as the majority of her singles but enough to make my best of list. I like how it kind of mixes rock, soul and pop into a single song and how strong her vocals are. She did that!
Stuck in the middle zone, I just want you alone. My guessing game is strong way too real to be wrong.
1st of 2 appearances from Lady Gaga |
72. Lana Del Rey - "Freak"
 |
I feel like Lana's discography quality has decreased like a lot ever since "Born To Die" but she still puts out some good music. I love how "Freak" is quite faithful to her sound which is good. I personally am not a big fan of the verses but I live for the chorus and how she sensually sings it. Either way, I really hope she starts releasing stronger material and putting more effort on her releases.
Baby if you wanna leave, come to California, be a freak like me too
1st and only appearance from Lana Del Rey |
71. Cam - "Mayday"
 |
I obviously would have never paid attention to "Mayday" if Fifth Harmony hadn't perform with her at the Country Music Awards and as soon as I heard it, I fell in love with it. I love how simple it is and also how real it sounds. I guess that's the good thing about country music. Nonetheless, Cam is kind of a cross over country artist, she almost touches Pop with this song and that's maybe why I like this song so much.
I said I'm moving on, 'cause things were getting rough but here I am in your bed
1st and only appearance from Cam |
70. Demi Lovato - "Stone Cold"
 |
I have a huge problem with Demi Lovato: her attitude. She thinks she is something else and she really isn't. She has a great voice and "Stone Cold" does showcase that and that's what justifies its appearance on the chart because I am not even a big fan of these type of songs. Yet I also admit she puts a lot of emotion into it and that kind of made me like it more.
Stone cold, I was your amber, but now she's your shade of gold
1st of 2 appearances from Demi Lovato |
69. Beyoncé - "All Night"
 |
This is Beyoncé's first appearance and while I don't get why "All Night" was selected as a single , I do love the smooth feeling this song has. It is like a breath of fresh air in a very hot weather. It feels good and makes you feel good and relaxed. I wouldn't say this is a highlight of "Lemonade" but that album is so good the worst song would probably have ranked.
So many people that I know, they're just tryna touch ya
1st of 6 appearances from Beyoncé |
68. Melanie C - "Anymore"
 |
After a long time without any releases, Melanie C finally did release new music but the final result wasn't that amusing. Overall, "Anymore" is a very nice track and I enjoy its low profile feeling - it could be perceived as a dance song but I don't think it goes that route due to Melanie C's soft vocals. I also believe this song could work if she was a higher act but well... She's Melanie C.
I've been trying to not think about you lately. Trying to do myself some good but I'm failing
1st and only appearance from Melanie C |
67. Tove Lo - "Cool Girl"
 |
I took some time to get used to this song but I do love it now. The chorus is so catchy and you can't get enough of it. Unlike "True Disaster", I appreciate the entire song including the verses and they manage to be catchy as well... Yet the question remains: with such a flawless album why was this the opening single? Doesn't make much sense, does it?
I'm a cool girl, I'm a, I'm a cool girl. Ice cold, I roll my eyes at you boy
2nd and last appearance from Tove Lo |
66. Justin Bieber - "Company"
 |
It's cool to like Justin Bieber's songs. They're modern, happy and not serious. To be honest, the last thing we need are sad songs given the state the world is on and that's why Justin manages to get in our heads and smash all over the world. We have fun listening to him and no matter how mediocre of an artist he is, this works and we buy it! "Company" is just like that! It makes you want to relax and just let go.
It ain't about the complications, I'm all about the elevation
2nd of 3 appearances from Justin Bieber |
65. Adele - "Send My Love (To Your New Lover)"
 |
It's impressive how Adele doesn't give a **** and continues to smash. "Send My Love" is not anywhere near her best and it still was overplayed by the radios and everyone knows about it! I like how this song is a departure from her main sound and how it actually is happy. A lot of her songs may be a BIT uptempo but they always seem to have this sad feeling to it.
We've gotta let go of all of our ghosts. We both know we ain't kids no more
1st of 3 appearances from Adele |
64. Kanye West - "Fade"
 |
Why is Kanye West such an idiot but then releases such cool music? I am not here for that because I am supporting someone who doesn't deserve much support. Eitherway, it's all about the music I guess and "Fade" is just genius. I love the beat to death. It gets you in the groove and you feel it! Lyric-wise is not too interesting but this beat gets you going all night.
I think I think too much
1st and only appearance from Kanye West
|
63. Alicia Keys - "Blended Family (What You Do For Love) (feat. A$AP Rocky)"
 |
What I love the most about Alicia's "Blended Family" has to do with the concept of the song and the risk of releasing it as a single. No one will pay attention to a family song... No one! All people care about is dance music and sex lyrics and while I appreciate those type of songs as well, we can admit this would never smash no matter how cute and sweet it is. It is a smooth track that gets you going. Props for Alicia for not playing safe!
I think you're beautiful, I think you're perfect
1st of 2 appearances from Alicia Keys
1st and only appearance from A$AP Rocky |
62. ZAYN - "Like I Would"
 |
I honestly could care less about ZAYN and his music. That's why I thought this song wasn't his. I never understood all the hype around "Pillow Talk", to be honest, but "Like I Would" S-L-A-Y-S. The beat is electrifying, the song is catchy and way more interesting than his main hit. I am glad this ended up being a hit in some countries though. If I am to be honest "Like I Would" is better than any One Direction song.
Hey what's up? It's been a while. Talking 'bout it's not my style
1st and only appearance from ZAYN |
61. DJ Snake - "Let Me Love You (feat. Justin Bieber)"
 |
Yep! I did use to say that this was inferior to "Cold Water" but not anymore! I think it's valid to compare the two tracks because they kind of share the same structure and meaning. I love how uplifting, relaxed and friendly this song is. Justin also sounds more into it and actually does some effort to be on key - which is not that easy from him! On top of that, lyric-wise is far way more interesting!
Say, go through the darkest of days. Heaven's a heartbreak away
1st and only appearance from DJ Snake
3rd and last appearance from Justin Bieber |
60. Jonas Blue - "Fast Car (feat. Dakota)"
 |
I usually don't like these radio hits that everyone likes but "Fast Car" is irresistible and hit me like a rock! The song is so smooth and Dakota's vocals are so nice to listen to! She has a very nice tone to her and the way she sings during this song just gets me and makes me feel good while jamming to it. I do prefer this modern version to the original one. Don't judge me!
City lights lay out before us and your arm felt nice wrapped round my shoulder
1st and only appearance from Jonas Blue
1st and only appearance from Dakota |
59. will.i.am - "Boys & Girls (feat. Pia Mia)"
 |
I must be like the only will.i.am supporter alive but who cares. I love the big majority of his productions and he usually delivers when the material is for him. "Boys & Girls" has one of the catchiest choruses of 2016 and you can NOT deny it. On top of that, Pia's voice is so friendly. On top of all that, I also appreciate the lyrics of the song. They're a bit basic but the message that it portrays is so cool!
And the girls wanna play with girls, boys wanna play with boys. So boy, don't you love this world?
1st and only appearance from will.i.am
1st and only appearance from Pia Mia |
58. Greta Salome - "Hear Them Calling"
 |
The first time I heard Iceland's entry for Eurovision, I was SO slayed and up until this day, I still am but not as much as before. The thing is... The chorus takes the song into a whole new level but then when the verses kick in, it doesn't keep up. Nonetheless, I love how mysterious, dark and hopeful this song sounds. The chorus instrumental is also quite epic. I wish Greta would've qualified for the finals.
I hear them calling me, I hear them whispering
2nd of 8 appearances from Eurovision Song Contest Acts |
57. Taylor Swift - "Out Of The Woods"
 |
If I recall correctly, "Out Of The Woods" was one of the promotional singles of the "1989" era, right? Well! I love the song but it doesn't hit me as hard as it did before. I feel like the production of this song is major... Out of the world and the lyrics are quite good but I feel like the song hasn't aged that well. I also don't think this should've been a single but since it is...
Remember when you hit the brakes too soon? Twenty stitches in the hospital room
2nd and last appearance of Taylor Swift |
56. Twenty One Pilots - "Heathens"
 |
I made sure I'd stay away from all this Suicide Squad hype. I hate overhyped and overrated things (no matter if a movie, song or artist) so I never really got to listen to "Heathens" up until December (yup!). I mean, I am lying. I heard it on the radio but never really paid much attention but when I finally took my time to explore the song, I was on the floor! The production is outrageous and the song's rhythm is just so hypnotic! I freaking love this.
And now they're outside ready to bust, it looks like you might be one of us
1st only appearance of Twenty One Pilots |
55. Ariana Grande - "Let Me Love You (feat. Lil' Wayne)"
 |
I have a very funny story with this one. When Ariana released this as a promo single, I was quite slayed (like everyone else, I guess?) and then the album came out. I heard it once but then she cancelled Rock In Rio and my relationship with her was A WRAP. I took some time to get back into "Dangerous Woman" and then I did but "Let Me Love You" wasn't there (on the tracklist)! Instead that ugly ass song with Macy Gray was repeated twice. I redownloaded the album and... The same thing! I was being haunted! I downloaded the track individually and was slayed all over again.
I just broke up with my ex. Now I’m out here single, I don’t really know what’s next
1st of 4 appearances of Ariana Grande
1st only appearance of Lil' Wayne |
54. The Chainsmokers - "Don't Let Me Down (feat. Daya)"
 |
I feel like a member of the GP for allowing this songs to be in my best of the year but they were quite good indeed or maybe I've been infected with some virus. Well, anyway! "Don't Let Me Down" was quite fantastic, the chorus is strong and the beat quite powerful now don't give me freaking "Closer", that's ridiculous! Besides the amazing chorus, the bridge of this song is out of this world and Daya's accent quite sexy!
I think I'm losing my mind now. It's in my head, darling I hope that you'll be here, when I need you the most

53. Zara Larsson - "Lush Life"
 |
S l a y m e! When I first heard her other single "Never Forget You", I thought this would be just another artist to ignore and while (again) I don't find Zara very interesting, "Lush Life" is SO good. It is so fresh and no matter how many times you repeat it, it just feels like the first time. It gets you going, makes you feel nice. Also because of the lyrics! They're pretty uplifting and very easy to relate! Who doesn't love lush life?
I live my day as if it was the last. Live my day as if there was no past
2nd and last appearance of Zara Larsson |
52. Maroon 5 - "Don't Wanna Know (feat. Kendrick Lamar)"
 |
See what I mean? What has got into me? Why am I loving these GP loved and overplayed songs? Am I not a pop fan anymore? I don't know me anymore! In an ideal and expected world, I would HATE this song but I love it so much, it's ridiculous. It's so catchy and, at the same time, it makes me feel relaxed and a bit sad because of the feeling it portrays. Adam's voice always has a way to get me hooked.
Do you think of me? Of what we used to be? Is it better now that I'm not around?
1st and only appearance of Maroon 5
1st of 3 appearances of Kendrick Lamar |
51. Calvin Harris - "My Way"
 |
...I don't know what else to say. I guess the GP had some good taste this year and kind of jammed to the right tracks? "My Way" is just so good, I love the beat and how relaxed it sounds. Calvin Harris has some great productions and if he keeps on delivering these type of songs, I will just have to stan and make him become my favorite DJ (mostly because of his looks, of course)!
You were the one thing in my way, You were the one thing in my way
1st of 2 appearances of Calvin Harris |
50. Dami Im - "Sound Of Silence"
 |
I literally thought this would win Eurovision this year but I was wrong... Well! Not if the voting system hadn't changed. Dami is so talented and "Sound Of Silence" is a very modern ballad, not only when it comes to the production but also accounting its lyrics. I love that! I wouldn't consider it to be a ballad at 100% due to its strenght and its beat but it kinda scratches there. Either way, one of my favorite entries in Eurovision this year. #JusticeForAustralia
Now my heart awakes to the sound of silence and it beats to the sound of silence
3rd of 8 appearances of Eurovision Song Contest Acts |
49. Zoe - "Loin D'Ici"
 |
The question remains: why did Austria send in a french song? It doesn't really matter, does it? The song is fantastic! It ended up qualifying for the finals and did get a very good score in the finals! I was proud of Zoe! "Loin D'Ici" is so sweet, cute and charming. On top of that its singer - Zoe - is so pretty and pure! I love her and her soft voice.
Dans un pays loin d’ici à la recherche du paradis
4th of 8 appearances of Eurovision Song Contest Acts
|
48. Fergie - "Life Goes On"
 |
I love how laid back and simplistic this song is... Especially after "M.I.L.F. $" and even though I like this "Life Goes On" song better than the first single, I don't think this is going anywhere. It just doesn't bring anything new to the table. On top of that, the video doesn't have replay value like "M.I.L.F. $" had. Maybe... Just maybe if the previous single had smashed, this could follow the trend but it's too late. Nonetheless, this is classic Fergie and we all love it!
You could go or you could stay who cares anyway?
1st and only appearance of Fergie |
47. Margaret - "Cool Me Down"
 |
The real polish entry for Eurovision Song Contest! No, I am kidding. Against all odds, Margaret placed second and ended up not representing Poland in the Eurovision Song Contest. While I don't dislike "Colors of Your Life", I think this would be way more appropriate but well! It would have to catch up since the selected song did slay and ended up giving Poland one of its best places. Back to Margaret, I have to say that the chorus of this song is just fire and sex. It's epic and I wouldn't touch it. It gives this hit flavor to the song.
I'm hotter than a fire, water can't cool me down
1st and only appearance of Margaret |
46. Freddie - "Pioneer"
 |
When I first heard all of the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 songs, this became my favorite and I supported it until the end but as for today, it is not my favorite anymore there's a couple of better songs. I love Freddie's raspy tone and I also love this midtempo structure which I also believe ended up hurting its performance. Did I mention already that I have a thing for songs that feature whistles? This one does.
Million hearts of a million people be proud you were born to be real
5th of 8 appearances of Eurovision Song Contest Acts |
45. Rihanna - "Kiss It Better"
 |
I am not a big fan of the "ANTI" era or its singles. In a normal Pedro's world, Rihanna would easily rank among top 10/20 but not this year. Not like her songs aren't good but not as good. As for "Kiss It Better", I didn't like it the first times I heard it but I ended up having it stuck in my head countless times and that must've mean something, right? I started getting into it and while I feel like it has a great production and kind of gives us a taste of the "old" Rihanna, it doesn't do all that.
Man, **** your pride. Just take it on back, boy take it on back boy
1st of 4 appearances of Rihanna |
44. Rihanna - "Work (feat. Drake)"
 |
When I first heard this song, I was quite hooked and I'd never imagine this would become the smash it did... At least in the US where it topped Billboard Hot 100 for ages! I don't think this song is all that and it won't be that remembered. On top of that, it has Drake and I don't like that boy AT ALL. What I like about "Work" is how laid back it is and how "just for fun" it sounds which is necessary to shake off all stress. Rihanna's fresh vocals also help!
All that I wanted from you was to give me, something that I never had
2nd of 4 appearances of Rihanna
1st and only appearance of Drake |
43. Adele - "Water Under The Bridge"
 |
I actually really like this song but "25" got old fast to me (except for "A Million Years" and "River Lea"). "Water Under The Bridge" is still good to listen to though. Unlike "Send My Love", "Water Under The Bridge" is not that laid back and that happy, it kind of follows the Adele formula but not in a heavy way. Nonetheless, just like the album got old for me, I am afraid the same happened to the majority of people.
Don't pretend that you don't want me, our love ain't water under the bridge
2nd of 3 appearances of Adele |
42. Samra - "Miracle"
 |
I am crazy for this song. Samra didn't exactly deliver at the Eurovision Song Contest. She is not an amazing singer or performer but this song is so powerful and catchy. I actually think that was what sent it to the finals because based on vocals/performer skills, she lacked a little. It is a very modern pop song that could've slayed outside of the Eurovision world in previous eras of Pop Music.
Guess I’ve had enough, boy. Guess I’m done like a burning fire, now it's gone
6th of 8 appearances of Eurovision Song Contest Acts |
41. Gwen Stefani - "Make Me Like You"
 |
The GP did Gwen Stefani so wrong. She delivered an amazing album (very up to date to what's in), amazing singles and amazing videos and she flopped almost as hard as No Doubt. "Make Me Like You" has this 80s vibe attached to it and while being a love song, it also has this "not so serious" feeling in it. I am easily manipulated by Gwen though. Her voice is so easy to listen to and so friendly and on top of that she has this nice and very unique accent that gets my attention.
I was fine before I met you, I was broken but fine

The whole update.
Stone Cold I do agree her attitude is a big problem why she hasn't been a big name tho.
Make Me was a great song beside that loud noise at somewhere around a minute into it.
