American liberalism = upholding free-market capitalism, obviously with "some" restrictions, but ones meant to help those in power (ie: bailouts).
Leftists and Liberals differ in their view of the individual vs the collective.
I'm... trying to explain without making this thread go into a debate about a specific issue.
Basically American liberals think intervention in personal freedoms is fine as long as it doesn't interfere with the economy because it anchors most of their views and will often say the answer to achieving personal freedom is the free market. Libertarians don't believe it's a government's place to intervene at all in freedoms of any section of life.
