News: Boy Scouts refuse transgender boy

Kristie Maldonado, Joe's mother, says she told the Scouts chapter before registering Joe that he's transgender. She says she was told the Scouts policy is to "go by birth certificate, what you're born with."

The local Scouts counselor didn't respond to CNN calls seeking comment.

But Effie Delimarkos, director of communications for the Boy Scouts of America, said in a statement that Joe "does not meet the eligibility requirements to participate in this program," and that the Boy Scouts referred him to alternative programs.

The statement added that the Boy Scouts "defer to the information provided for an individual's birth certificate and their biological sex" in determining who can join.

This sucks, but I'm not surprised by this at all, though I am surprised that it took this long for a story like this to come out, as the girl scouts have been in the news for trans girls (which they support now I believe) for a few years.

Honestly, as someone with a history in scouts, this boy would be a lot better to find a more inclusive group (there are alternatives) as he grows up because Scouting, sadly, does not foster inclusivity, and he will have a shitstorm of a time if he (somehow) manages to stay in through boy scouts. Even though I love the core ideals of the program towards being a good citizen and being selfless and being self-sufficient, it still nurtures a very conservative viewpoint of masculinity, sexuality, and I'd be afraid for the environment and potential abuse that this boy would encounter going forward, even if he found an inclusive scout troop, that he would likely encounter from other troops or leaders that aren't as open minded.

It's a ****** situation when a trans kid can't even be a cub scout to do fun **** because we're still so backwards as a society when it comes to accepting and loving one another.

I feel like it's pretty bad that the Scouts kicked him out once he had already settled in but at the same time the mother should have been completely honest about her kids situation.

In a video interview, she says she was. She told them her child was transgender.

It only became an issue when transphobic parents complained.
