1) I didn't start the thread. 2) This is an open forum and people are able to start discussions on various topics at will; you nor anyone else is required to enter any given thread and participate. 3) Clearly if someone thinks what is being said in regards to Beyoncé being the first singer to use elements of rap such as brag records, they should be able to easily reference other singers or simply articulate a dissenting opinion. Why would simply posing a question on an open forum -- in a benign and respectful manner that's clearly not flamebait or trolling -- cause a mess? The thread starter isn't responsible for how people choose to respond.

Edit: Not Janet, maybe T-Boz in TLC. But definitely Teena Marie, but she did it maybe twice. DC/Bey was known for singing very fast while maintaining melody (which not everyone can do, well), hence "rap-singing". That's what made them popular. To deny Destiny's Child impact on pop radio would be to deny the fact that Mariah Carey made it popular to put a rapper on a pop girls song.

A-List sngers today don't have to do it either. They do it because it's a trend rappers started years ago and as we know, the hip-hop influence is strong on 21st Century pop. Most of them have tried to drop bars and brag. Even older singers like Mariah Carey and Madonna have got in on it this century. It's nothing serious unless it's some ongoing feud.

It was a natural progression with mainstream music being influenced by rap. From 2000 onwards that type of lyric grew way more popular so it's natural for Beyonce to have done it, even Britney did.

DC's is a great girl group with a great image. their contribution to music consists of taking a term that was already used in the hood "bootylicious" and getting nice anthemic woman anthems for their generation. Why are we overselling it as if R&B only talked about cheating and being cheated on and love before DC3?

TLC didn't talk about stereotypical R&B/hip hop stuff. Nor did Salt n pepa. They actually went against that.

You can look at various 70s and 80s R&B and pop and find many gems about woman confidence and being bragadocious in addition to the normal expected subject matter.

It really does come across as if Beyonce fans plan these threads out in their base to come up with let's claim Beyonce was the start of or the creation of because most people here probably don't know much music before the 2000s besides the main legends.

Beyonce is amazing and Destiny's child was a good girl group. Stuff like this seems like an attempt to oversell it or even manipulate people into actually thinking this stuff is true.

It says alot when non fans make these threads because it shows objectivity and true impact. On the contrary, It's quite telling when stans make these threads because it shows a need for some strange reason to say look what my fave did or look what I'm trying to make you believe my fave did.

In real life, people are not going to look at DC3 and say well before DC3 woman were afraid to be confident and boast about themselves. Like, what?
