Serious question, IF there is a God why did he just stand by and let these awful things happen? The world would be such a better place without Religion and the hatred it breeds.

Hitchens was a prolific writer and vocal critic of religion but (like other New Atheists) not a scholar of any academic religious discipline so his opinions on religious topics {like those which he particularly raised in his book) are merely anecdotal and not authoritative. There are many writings authored by actual philosophers/historians/anthropologists/sociologists of religion that have already refuted most of these antitheist arguments. Most of these antitheist books are popular-level books that are targeted at the masses and meant only for entertainment purposes. They are not taken seriously in academia . You will be hard pressed to find any reasonable thesis or academic research on religion which cites these antitheist books as sources.
