Many people buy albums solely because of 1 hit single or 2. Back in the days many artists would just release their singles on the radio without physical copies so that they could force the public to buy the album and all the buyers really did was playing the hit singles over and over again.

Rihanna's album sold more than Joanne and has more SPS than Joanne, despite giving away 1.47 million copies. I don't know why you're bringing up the Navy when multi-week #1 album ANTI was the 5th best-performing album in the US.
