I like male artists. I would say about 95% of the music that I listen to nowadays is by a male. When I was 14, my iPod was cluttered with Britney Spears and Katy Perry albums... I loved catchy pop music (and still do), but I discovered that there are men and male-fronted bands that write music that is essentially the same genre, but much better. Lol. Plus, my favorite songwriters are all men, with the exception of Taylor Swift.
The famous ones are so generic I can't stand it. Male bands are a bit better right now (minus Maroon 5). The good male artists are not doing that well: Adam Lambert, Trent Harmon.

By chance his girlfriend came across a needle and soon she did the same
At home there are seventeen-year-old boys and their idea of fun

I know this isn't directed towards me but majority of artists I listen to are male. When it comes to Pop specifically, then that's where I prefer females usually.
I have more female artists on my iTunes, but I have a lot of male artists too as well. So for me I don't dislike male artists at all. When it comes to female musicians though, I feel like they can do so many more things with their voice.
But why did they in the 80s? Why were Prince/Bowie/George Michael loved by both male and females? We've meant to have progressed. I do agree that that guys need to try and be 'cool', but its part of the reason why a lot of the pop-boys are so damn boring. Express yourselves and take a leaf out of these guys' books.
That's true. I can only assume that it could possibly be the record labels giving these artists a certain image as it would be easier to sell off i.e. pander to pre-teens image.
As record sales are dying and labels needing all the money they can get, it's probably better career-wise and in terms of finance to be safe and align with something the younger generation can relate to.
And this younger generation mostly stan for Top 40 trash.
I don't. Actually most of my faves are males but not those "mainstream" acts like Bruno, Bieber, Weeknd, Drake etc. I love EDM the most so my faves are Djs / producers
