She jumps from genre to genre more than any popular artist in the last 20 years easily. From EDM to synth-pop to electronica to folk rock, she just keeps hopping.
Part of me just wants her to become a rock artist, because I think she has the voice (and stamina) for it. Her voice is always so muted and dull on pop records (a la most of The Fame).
As Gaga matures, will she settle into one genre/sound and reach her pinnacle as an artist?
She'll never achieve a "cohesive musical identity" and her music will dip and peak in quality if she continues jumping randomly into unfamiliar territory. Born This Way to ARTPOP to Joanne were pretty abrupt transitions, don't you think?
Madonna is one of the greatest because her music transitions were smooth and seamless. Gaga's are anything but.
not you acting like she jumped from edm to synth-pop to eletronica when she just kept singing pop music throughout all her career, basically (and it's not like the gp knows the difference between any of these genres)
the transition to cheek to cheek was abrupt, but I think most of the songs on Joanne could easily fit on Born This Way
she's always done pop but her gig has always been to explore many similar genres within a single album. this always results in her getting criticized for lacking authenticity/focus/cohesion but it's always what she's done
TF was pop but also disco, electronica, synth etc...
TFM was pop but also industrial, and europop
BTW was pop but also stadium rock, trance, mariachi, house, metal, and post-disco
ARTPOP was pretty much pure pop but she tried to explore EDM and R&B with very little success
Joanne was pop but also country, folk, and soft rock
She stays in the pop genre with every album except Cheek 2 Cheek so I think she has already chosen one. She just loves including influences of other genres into her pop world and that's what most artists do.
