You need to also understand that those songs need to be good too. GP is not dumb. They will not listen to crap and generic songs. All those definitely are.

I'm sorry but there is no way Shakira or Rihanna's label are wasting cash for 10 year old songs to be on these playlists. They (Umbrella, Hips Don't Lie) are just classic 00's defining songs that Spotify has decided to include for authenticity on particular genres. Not every placement has to be payola, it's just a general guide or idea.

It's being played but often people aren't choosing to play it, they are just tolerating a play. Their listening habits come from a ready made playlist which fits a general vibe which is suitable to the user, but it's not organically chosen by the individual.

It's not quite "on demand streaming" anymore when this happens because it was not necessarily streamed by actual demand... the user might be indifferent to or even dislike the song but not bother to change it. In fact on the "freemium" tier of Spotify users are prohibited to skip more than a certain number of songs within a specific time period, which is really devious.

The popularity and influence of these playlists shows the average consumer's general laziness or unwillingness to curate their own music, basically they would rather have somebody do it for them. It's like eating a microwave ready-meal spaghetti bolognese instead of cooking your own with raw ingredients. I don't necessarily have a problem with this but it does have room for abuse and that's what this chart tracks. However it is impossible to tell whether each song was authentically placed by Spotify on particular playlists or not... but the placings give a rough estimate.

I wasn't implying it was due to payola. I know it's probably due to throwback playlists or what not. I was just making a point that older songs do get playlisted.
