Do you believe in cultural relativism?
Definition:
Quote:
Cultural relativism is the view that no culture is superior to any other culture when comparing systems of morality, law, politics, etc. It's the philosophical notion that all cultural beliefs are equally valid and that truth itself is relative, depending on the cultural environment. Those who hold to cultural relativism hold that all religious, ethical, aesthetic, and political beliefs are completely relative to the individual within a cultural identity. Relativism often includes moral relativism (ethics depend on a social construct), situational relativism (right or wrong is based on the particular situation), and cognitive relativism (truth itself has no objective standard).

Well do you actually believe in it?

Yes, to an extent.
The fact that I have a certain cultural belief will make me view another person's cultural belief in a certain way and vice versa. For example, cannibalism could be ethical for some people whereas I would view it as unethical. It's an extreme example but fortunately most of the global population view cannibalism as a bad thing
It's all about perspective but I guess I agree - there is no TRUE right or wrong. But we should (and thankfully, we do) have the right to criticise other cultural beliefs, especially if they are questionable. Anyone can do anything and say it is their "culture" and use it as an excuse, which is problematic af.

hell no, there are so many messed up cultures in the world, and let's not even start about the religion topic
reason and facts to make humanity be stronger together >>>>>>>> any ideology, especially the ones that discriminates basic human rights and treats people differently because of their gender, race, sexual orientation, age, etc.
we still need to make better progress for ourselves, but unlike some messed up places in the world rn...

To an extent. I think it's important to understand that there are differences in culture due to backgrounds, histories, things that someone who hasn't been part of that culture could never fully comprehend.
Now when a culture gives people a mandate to mistreat others, something must change. But I don't think there's much an outsider can really do, the change has to come from within. god i feel like a hippie

I disagree with this, when people actually cross the line and damage someone else physically or psychologically, no matter the culture they're in, it must be seem as an act against humanity and must be criticized and put to an end. I think humanity has evolved as whole ever since we took off and built civilizations so we should base most of our values and morals in human rights and not culture.

To an extent.
Some things should not be tolerated even if they can be seen under a culture lens. Female genital mutilation for example.

Not at all. People being closed minded and easily offended about this bull**** is keeping people away who might genuinely love parts of your culture.
I'm so tired of everything being "cultural appropriation". Go hide in your little hole if you wanna keep everything to yourself.

I understand that someone's opinions are formed by their surroundings, and thus I cannot blame people who live in a country like Saudi Arabia for being homophobic. On the other hand, I do see homophobia as something that is universally bad. Racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, etc is universally bad. Murder is universally bad. Every human is born equal, and every culture should respect that.
Basically I'm a universalist who sees that one is formed by the conditions one lives in. Not a relativist.

Mess obviously extreme cases (e.g. genocides) are wrong but I do believe right or wrong is constructed by man if that makes sense. I'm not a cultural relativist, I don't like to attach myself to one thing but I do see some truth to it. I'm not saying it's right either or advocating for it before y'all attack me I just don't think everything is so black and white.
I do believe accusations of cultural appropriation is BS tho, in most cases, and is mostly exaggerated but it does exist.
Also, I believe that what you hope would be true is different from what is actually there but tbh idk what to believe anymore which is kind of tragic everything has its pros and cons to me.

Calm down, we're just discussing our points of view. I'm not an intolerant attacker who believes only his opinions matter unlike some members on here.
I believe that everything has pros and cons just like you said and that's why we need to take out the cons on cultures and leave the pros so we can evolve to be even better than today and live in a more developed society.

alkjagk I feel like the general idea of freedom of speech is so warped nowadays, I'm scared to say anything it gives me legit anxiety.
But anyway, I basically agree with you. Each culture can be seen as valid but that does not necessarily make what they believe "right". We should be able to criticise their beliefs and not excuse what they do just because it's their culture, especially when what they're doing or believing in is infringing on someone else's human right. I also believe that what we see as right or wrong is a result of human advancements in civilisation which is basically what you said but in a different way. I'm still conflicted though. The pessimist (or maybe the realist) inside of me is saying that it's not realistic and these terrible things will continue to exist it sounds depressing but I honestly have no hope for this world. Even if we do take out the "cons" of the world, wouldn't that just result in more problems? Isn't the idea of a perfect utopia just as messed up?
The one thing I know for definite is that I have trust issues
Bottom line: Cultural relativism does exist, in my opinion, but I don't agree with it at all and I don't think it should be accepted. It gives bad people the permission to continue to do bad things and I'm definitely not here for that. I believe it exists but I don't believe in it (if that makes sense). People shouldn't be given a pass for torturing other people etc etc. That's something I do NOT agree with.

Kind of:
I agree in certains aspects, I mean, the politics systems, cultures, laws etc. are created by very imperct humans;
we are all told what is right, wrong and how should we behave since we are born, therefore I believe that when you take into account culture sometimes it is so hard or perhaps even impossible to judge someone as good or evil or to judge them as being morally right or wrong.
I do believe that no culture should be exempt of criticism, that's just problematic and it makes it so hard to change and progress.
And, while it's difficult to judge the person, it is possible to judge the act itself. If it is something that causes harm to them or to somebody else then it shouldn't just get a pass for being their culture.
