3D max, Cinema 4D, Blender or Rhino 3D are the most used programs, I've tried Blender by myself cause it's free but as good as the commercial ones. I didn't do anything out of this world 3D programs are hard!
I study graphic design and the first two are installed on our computers (1st one is on Windows and 2nd on macs) so I'll learn them in the following years.
EDIT: I recommend you getting into illustration and 2D animation first, Animate CC, Moho (anime Studio) or Toon Boom Harmony are good, depending if you want bone based animation or something more frame per frame.
