Because slavery, Jim Crow, stonewall, prohibition, etc. are not that old and historic for us. To have the first female, black, gay leader finally fighting for the same cause as you is a great feeling. No one votes for a candidate just because of their race, sex, or sexuality, but if that opportunity is right in front you, you take it. Again, America is not the U.K. We've been through way too much (and I mean in the last 2 decades alone)
