From what I've researched, there are several branches of Satanism. The original one was the church created by Anton Lavey, who was a believer of social darwinism.

I'm on the same boat as you with that particular brand of Satanism. I prefer the teachings of The Satanic Charch which is a different branch and focuses on self-enlightenment.

From what I gather, they began as an anti-religion group and by doing so, Christians began refering to them as devil worshippers and soul-less Satanic people. They loved that the attention would shed light on their cause so they chose to adopt controversial symbols like Bathomet.
