19% of global industry revenues. By 2018 that will change.
That's true in terms of revenue, but streaming used to (under the old formula) count for 66.4% of chart 'sales' on the singles chart because of the weighting it was given, so it was 'bigger' than downloads on the charts so to speak
I'm still here for tracking the charts as close to revenue as possible and this seems closer so I'm here for it
It's the fastest-growing, but it doesn't generate the most revenue. Yet!
So in April, 20% of revenues were from downloads and 19% from streaming. I'm sure streaming is ahead by now. I still remember some article here with people celebrating that streaming "won".
The thing with streaming is that the charts should be partially based on growth or an influx of listeners/streams as opposed to the pure numbers of listeners/streams. Charts have been traditionally been based on new purchases and discovery and I think thats worth so much more than whether people listen to the same overexposed song 50x a week or 200x. I have a big appetite for music but even my listening habits can be regressive with me reverting to the same playlists for months on end, using it as background music on my commute into work and the like.
Downloads are declining so fast in UK, and Streaming is continuing to rise so much literally in just a matter of a few months it will be back to the same representation for Streaming on the chart.
In fact this barely changes the chart as of now. The whole Top 10 is the same songs this week with this formula

In UK, Streaming makes well over double the revenue of Downloads.

They cap the streams at 10 per day per person, so listening to it 200 times a week won't help the song anymore than listening 70 times a week, which counts for 0.47 sales maximum.
