From my experience since I've only met gay guys through Grindr, they ask right away if you're a top or a bottom. If two people really wanted to be together despite the position, they could flip flop and take turns being each role.
Most of the gay guys are versatile, that's how they work. It's true that some people prefer to be top or bottom, but like you can just discuss sex. It's not that complicated.
As someone in a gay relationship, me and my boyfriend asked each other who was a top and a bottom from the beginning. Then we went on dates but didn't have sex until like a week after we met because we both wanted to take things slow and see how it would go for us. And now we've been together for 6 months but sex isn't the most important thing in a relationship, there's communication, love etc

Well, I've never dated a bottom. But there's way more than anal sex in a relationship and it can be just as satisfying. But even before sex you can find out what's someone inclination. I mean most of my exes liked to touch my waist and my butt a lot before we even had sex. If you date someone you'll eventually what they like.
I don't understand how you wouldn't know if the person you're dating isn't top/bottom/versatile though? Especially after a year AND falling in love. Wouldn't you have had sex before that happened? When I met my boyfriend, we discussed our preferences after the 3rd date. I mean even if you didn't know, after a year, surely you would discuss it and then compromise if you were both bottom/top. It's not hard? Are y'all really that bad at communicating in real life lol?
