The song picks up after PI because they're related. She wakes up after falling for the illusion (love, life, etc...). The color is back in her life, but she soon slips back to where she started, back into the illusion. There are repetitive make-up scenes because it's a cycle. It's literally part of the lyrics. She's dressing up to cover the sadness of always falling for the same illusion, over and over again.
PI starts again, because it's a cycle. This time friends come to help pick her up and she gets a sign from her family to restore her faith in herself. The one reason to stay.
It's not necessarily about love. The video is actually about giving up on life. It makes sense when you look at it from that angle. It's a beautiful video in its simplicity.
That being said, she should have had the PI cycle happen three times as opposed to two. It's easier to understand. Rule of Threes and all. Still the choice could have been for contrasting purposes.
Oh and the face she pulls as she talks while crying is actually authentic. Have you ever seen your cringeworthy faces when you're bawling and trying to make words? You don't look pretty. It actually has a term. "ugly cry".

I love this song. So heartwrenching and indicative of the end of her career.

You know what? As a true fan you should be able to accept what your favorite artist brings to you. Art is not equal to a new release of a product, the industry can engineer it like that but art is organic. Lady Gaga has made a singer-songwriter approach to her new album which can translate into a more subdued, low-key visual material. It's more about the music than the flashing lights, of course the Gaga I fell in love with has explosive, bombastic music videos, and I long for that. However, in 'Joanne' the approach is deliberately more about the music than the flashy visuals and I really appreciate that.
Of course I want her to pour a couple of million dollars to give me mind-blowing visuals, but I really can appreciate a simple music video. "Someone Like You" by Adele was a low-key video, not saying all singer-songwriter kind of MVs have to be like that but if that's what's the artist wants to bring I'm able to accept that. This MV is particularly very simple and I can appreciate it, it's moving in her way and if you're a Gaga stan, you should be able to accept it and support it. All in all, the music is what is vital and even though this is probably not a MV aimed to blow the minds of people it's more about to connect, dedicated to the fans and her loved ones and I like it in that way, and that motivation is potentiated because the song she brought is great.
I'm all for 5-6 singles with a singer-songwriter style MVs. She can bring the flashy pop in the next album.

Typical little monster trying to justify Gaga's non sense. I feel like I'm on my art history class.

We understand. The message is as subtle as a punch to the face, no need for explanations.
It's the execution that's bad.

This is why your fave will continue to be consumed by mediocrity. A solid portion of her fanbase will still wave away and accept anything she does. It's a tad frightening.

I just watched the video again after the buzz died down and I somehow get it. There are no frills. The video is bland. For a reason. The song is a deep emotional song about love and faith, any flairs or accentuated nuances would have been a distraction. The message was put forward by her as literally as she could.
This is me behind the persona, I went through a tough time with love, I hope you can relate and feel better about your life.
A lot of people will relate to the gift of rosaries that her sis gave her for the holiday season.
Watch again with this in mind and see if it made sense.
