Rogue One bigger than Fantastic Beasts. Why?

Rogue One has just been released but is already on track to surpass Fantastic Beasts.

In the US Fantastic Beasts made $8.75 million from it's midnight release, Rogue One made $29 million. Fantastic Beasts earned $219.9 million WW on it's opening weekend, Rogue One is on track for between $280-$350 million.

Rogue One also seems to be slightly preferred by critics as well. Why is this?

Because it has Star Wars in the title and people know it's about the franchise. As for Fantastic Beasts, not everybody knew it has to do with Harry Potter. And I've also read on ATRL that Star Wars is bigger and more iconic than HP so yeah.

Because Fantastic Beasts is purely original movie sold solely by J.K. Rowling's power, while Rogue One depends heavily on nostalgia and generations of people who have seen A New Hope

Also they have the same metacritic score so the OP lies.

The trailers don't show a single Harry Potter character whereas Vader is slapped all over promo for Rogue One.

You could've read better my comment, just saying. I said that it's more obvious for Rogue One that it's part of the Stars Wars franchise since it has Star Wars in the title. The other one is not called; "Harry Potter: A Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them story". It's simply called Fantastic Beasts ... so it's not so obvious it has to do with Harry Potter.

Stars Wars have been around for 30 years, so obviously they have fans from all generations. HP fans are mostly millenials. And yea, it's the same universe, but the posters or the film title doesn't directly reference HP.

. It was very obvious, it was even marketed as being "From J.K. Rowling's Wizarding World".

No one uses metacritic for film reviews. Rotten Tomatoes is the most popular review aggregator for movies and Rogue One is 10 points above Fantastic Beasts there.

Oh and I'm aware that their Metacritic score is the same but Rogue One has a higher Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB score so that's why I said slightly preferred.

Everyone who wants to be taken seriously uses metacritic for movies. Rotten Tomatoes is full of fanboy bloggers plus it's not even a score. C+ review can be still Fresh if a 'critic' clicks that option (they get to choose). As you said it's just a review aggregator not a real score. IMDb is also fanboys. If you wanna talk about acclaim from film critics they both have 66 score.
