I think the larger point that people are trying to make is that America bases their decision to intervene or not based on what natural resources they can gain from the military occupation - we rarely just intervene out of humanitarian concern without some sort of ulterior motive

We can get plenty of oil from Syria if we depose Assad. I doubt that's the point. Fact is we couldn't even steal the Iraq oil and we ended up paying more for it than we would have had we not went to war (Which, if you remember correctly, made the oil prices go through the roof). Today, we're almost completely independent of the Middle East's oil due to our investments in clear energy. Being someone who's pro-intervention, I think it's fair to say we've failed the people of Syria and by we I mean the entire first world.

What she's clearly saying is that the strongest and most stable should try to help the weakest. Hence the bit about being a global citizen first and foremost.
