Margaret Cho exposes Tilda Swinton + Tilda brings receipts!
Quote:
Margaret Cho has been vocal about the erasure of Asian-Americans from Hollywood films, including the casting of Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One, a Tibetan monk, in Marvel's Doctor Strange. Cho led public conversations online about how Asian-Americans are whitewashed in media earlier this year after the controversy erupted, and apparently she also had private conversations with Swinton herself. Tilda eventually emailed me and she said that she didn't understand why people were so mad about Doctor Strange and she wanted to talk about it, and wanted to get my take on why all the Asian people were mad, Cho tells Bobby Lee on his podcast TigerBelly. It was so weird.
Cho and Swinton had a "long discussion," after which Swinton told Cho not to tell anybody. It was a long fight about why the part should not have gone to her. That's what I thought: The part should not have gone to her, said Cho. We'd fight about it and basically it ended with her saying, 'Well I'm producing a movie and Steven Yeun is starring.' (This is no doubt a reference to Bong Joon-hos upcoming film Okja in which Swinton stars with Yeun.)
Oh, like I have a black friend, Lee joked.
It was weird because I felt like a house Asian, like I'm her servant, Cho said. Like the ones when they have in the raj, they would have the house servant who was your confidante
The servant that was close to you. That's sort of what I felt like, like I was following her with an umbrella. I had a weird feeling about the entire exchange, especially the part of Don't tell anybody.
The conversation began because Cho and Lee were talking about navigating an industry where there were no other people like them. "The fact is we're not given roles that are worthy of us," Cho said. "We're constantly having to wade through and do what we can."

I commend Tilda for wanting to sit down and understand it but the fact she walked away with no understanding and made that comment is not a good look.

Tbh Tilda was great in the role but it was so jarring to see a white woman leading this East Asian monastery...

It's because she wanted reassurance/comfort, but Margaret wouldn't give it to her.

They were actually in Nepal, which is not in East Asia. But yes, it was weird to see white people, black people and a token East Asian guy, but very few actual locals. Why not just change the setting if it's so important to change the race?

Not sure how much of this I believe. It's only one side of the story. I do find it hard to believe that Tilda Swinton wouldn't understand "why Asians were mad", though. It's not like this is a new narrative and she doesn't strike me as someone who would be as ignorant at all, so... Idk.

People ask for a black Peter Parker/MJ and everyone loses their mind.
A white woman plays an Asian and it's "stop overreacting. It's the acting quality that matters."

Sounds like sour grapes. Tilda reached out to her and now Margaret is making their discussion public to get some attention. Not a good look.

More like bring attention to a cause that greatly needs it . So it is a good look. Congrats on your attempt to make her look bad though.

its really shady and underhand to leak info of a private conversation that was specifically asked to be kept private, its really ****ing rude imo.

Why it so hard to believe she wouldn't understand? We had a threads about Tilda, Emma Stone and Scarlett Johannson all playing characters that were originally East Asian and a strong percentage of people thought it was an overreaction.

Tilda reached out to her for own personal comfort, not out of those altruistic motivation.

I feel like it's so ignorant to think that she can't be ignorant at all, when u only know her through interviews.
What kinda blissful ignorance It's crazy how people will excuse away ANYTHING if they simply think someone is nice

Not when you just use that person to appease your own guilty conscience for perpetuating a systematic problem. Tilda will live, while a deserving asian actor/tress is still working tirelessly for his/her big break.

I think exposing the truth for a cause is more important and most of you would agree.
I see people cheering all the time when homophobic US politicians get outted. At the end of the day your privacy doesn't mean **** if it's at the expense of millions of people. Like if I'm in a convo with someone and they say " I hate porch monkeys, don't tell anyone hehe", you best believe I'm blowing up their spot, **** their privacy.

I thought it was a known fact that Tilda was offered the role so the movie wouldn't piss off china?

So here are my thoughts.
I think the criticism and accusation of whitewashing is 100% valid. As someone who is not Asian-American or Asian but am a Person of color, I was vocal about this as well because I believe it is all of our fight.
I personally loved the casting of Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One, up until they announced a white boy as Iron Fist. Then DD season 2 came out and the only Asians on the show were stereotypical, boring ninja villains.
Marvel Studios has MOSTLY failed when it comes complex and diverse Asian representation in their comics and live action properties.

I didn't say she can't be ignorant, I just personally find it hard to believe that Tilda Swinton who I have always found to be a rather smart individual wouldn't understand why white actors playing characters from other races is a problem. I don't think accepting one of said roles necessarily means you have to be dumb and unaware. Tons of actors are probably very aware of the problem, but they know that if they decline a certain role it's just gonna go to another white actor anyway (which is another problem, but that's not for today).
