They were probably sent there by the Job Centre, I was unemployed before Christmas last year and they were desperate to push me into working at Amazon. If they leave this job they'd have no income for a month whilst they're punished by the Government for "choosing" to quit. They're probably supporting a family or something and can't afford to not have this job.

I mean, to be sleeping in a tent in December -- there HAS to be more to that than bus fare. Is the bus system reliable/on time? Given how rigid the disciplinary system sounds, they may also be scared of getting fired for being late or something. I think that bit might have been oversimplified by the person relaying the story.

Amazon is a great place to work if you have advanced qualifications. I've never heard any shady stories about Amazon's treatment of their less specialized workers in the US, but hopefully this investigation brings some positive change.

NY Times did an expose two years ago that said exactly the opposite. On hacker news the same thing was revealed just last week. Where have you been? Amazon treats all their workers like dirt regardless of skill level.

Amazon is a crappy company.

I can't speak for other countries but I don't think many people are aware of how exploitory Amazon (and the UK government welfare system is).

If, for whatever reason, you find yourself in the JobCentre especially as a young person, you'll technically be forced to do whatever they tell you to do to avoid sanctions. Amazon exploit this by further.

My sister applied for a job there just because she thought it would be a cute lil job for a while but she only lasted 3 weeks.

Last year during the month between the end of my Uni course and the first day of my current job I was forced to do full time "voluntary" (unpayed) work experience in Savers for an entire month the very day I went to the Job Center, bearing in mind I already had loads of actual work experience before this anyway. But I needed that £50 a week because I was broke AF after uni.

Long story short, I didn't get a single penny despite working the equivalent of an £800+ wage, because for that entire month Job Center were sorting out paperwork to prove that I was no longer in full time education....

.I should sue, but I don't even know if I can.

Just from reading reviews on Glassdoor. I don't think it's a horrible place to work if you're not replaceable. The company culture seems to rely on self-motivation and self-discipline. I would think you'd need these traits to survive engineering courses. Amazon definitely weeds out the slackers relatively quickly, but, like I said, this is just from reading reviews. I haven't actually interned there to have any first-hand experience.

that's honestly the governments fault for allowing a company to treat their workers like crap

i mean i get that working at amazon warehouses must be an incredible stressful and hard job but considering how fast amazon delivers, i think it's okay that they expect a lot from their workers. still exploitation is never okay and i feel really bad for the workers
