this is not really a matter of spelling issues; it's just stylistic preference, like whether or not to do "'s" or "s'" when referring to a possessive of a proper noun that ends in 's', like "Illinois'" v "Illinois's"
there's also 'amok' v 'amuck', 'amongst' v 'among', 'analog' v 'analogue', 'ax' v 'axe', 'flier' v 'flyer', 'whiskey' v 'whisky', etc
