The reason Adele is at #1 even though she only tops digital albums is because she's honestly in a league of her own. Her album sales are so far and beyond above everyone else's, it goes to show just how much her music has resonated with so many different demographics. If she would've actually toured during 21, she would've broken so many records... A shame she has stage fright. She might not be the typical "pop girl", but she outdoes everyone, male artists included, so I think it would be a bit false to not list her at #1.

Taylor Swift is in 2nd place, as she both has very successful music and is a commercial celebrity as well. She has the album sales, single sales, airplay, and touring numbers, as well as the social media presence.

Katy Perry gets third place. Although Rihanna is technically the "digital sales queen", 50% of her sales come from the 2000's decade. If we're JUST talking about this decade, Katy Perry is the absolute ruler of digital singles. She has 5 of the 10 most purchased female digital songs. She managed to do this with only three albums, and most of her sales come from one album alone.
