We fans know that Janet has her role to play in the history of popular music, and we know the influence she has on today's pop and R&B females. That being said, what do you guys think the general public's perception of her catalog is today? Do you think Janet's music is remembered well or as well as that of her peers? If not, why not?

I definitely think her hits aren't as remembered as they should be. At the same time it's definitely over exaggerated by the haters

Here in Aus, you'll occasionally see videos of her or Together Again will pop on the radio

As for public perception. My friends are ignorant of that generation in general, some of them can't name any Madonna songs.

I've seen a drag queen do If and I heard Together Again played in a club at like 3am when they were trying to get everyone out but that's about it.

I hate the version of Doesn't Really Matter on the AFY album. Like it's cute that they used the studio version of the VMA performance, but it's ruined for me by dragged-out opening vocal line.

It seems like a small thing, but her delivery of "Doesn't matter what your..." sounds so much better than "Does....nt....matt...er...what...your..."

I once knew someone who said that he never listened to anything that was released before like 1995, because it was "old." I personally love to get into artists that have been around for decades, because there's such a treasure trove of material to dive into, there's already a legacy to enjoy. And you know that if they endured that long and continued to release records, some level of quality had to have justified it.

Recently, I learned that it only costs a label $350 to get an RIAA certification. That's it! You have to present your spreadsheets and shipment info and all of that, but the actual certification is just $350. Let me make some donations to A&M and Virgin.

Blame the Super Bowl and Justin for basically ruining her career. Her music never gets played for a throwback day on pop radio so nobody really hears her stuff from time to time like they do the rest.

Janet will always be a legend. She should be in the Rock n Roll Hall of fame already!!

I agree, and honestly I wasn't a big fan of this song until this past year. I'm not saying I'm nutty nutty nutty for it or anything, but I can see its charms more clearly now.

I want to give Justin a break sometimes because I try to remember that he was a lot younger and just beginning his solo career. Imagine all the people around him scaring him and saying things like, "this could drag you down too, she's had her time, you're only getting started, you can't be sucked into this, here's what you need to do." We all saw how easily he broke on that Punk'd episode.

On the topic of her career and the promotion of her legacy, Janet has also done a bit of label-hopping so it makes one wonder who's looking out for her past work and ensuring that the sparkle is maintained. And she switched labels in the middle of the height of her popularity, so there's no centralized... "we look after all of the biggest albums" situation like a lot of artists of her stature have.

I can't really blame Justin or the SB for her wayward career. It certainly hurt her image considerably, but so did releasing 2 relatively garbage albums and rehashing tired raunchy themes and imagery into middle age. If she had gone from Damita Jo to something like Unbreakable (with one solid hit), it could've been a quick comeback and not the slow decline we were left with. Honestly it's amazing she could still get a #1 album and sell out (some) arenas last year, and it's a peep of what she could've accomplished with proper management and artistic direction.

Well it would've been hard anyway to score any hits no matter what she released because she got blacklisted. Her songs or videos were never played.

Which is why it would've been so much better (unintended) to release soemthing like Unbreakable in 2006 INSTEAD of trying to chase a hit (although chasing a hit with Khia seems very misinformed).

Is the worst thing she's ever recorded. The shrill vocals. I can't. I'd rather listen to Communication. At least that has some laughably corny lyrics about microwaves and things that set it apart as a novelty of the times. Weekend is just an earache and and overall piece of JD-encouraged ****.

I know y'all are not still trashing So Excited. That's one of the best songs on 20 Y.O.
