I think I agree with this. When it comes to religious symbols it should be everybody or no one. If Mary is there, what about Satan or Buddha? Plus France doesn't let students at public schools wear the veil so allowing this statue would be hypocritical and against the laïcité.

They should've kept it. It's a beautiful work of art that deserves to be seen regardless of its religious symbolism. I would have said the same if it were a statue of any other deity/religious figure.

There's not enough Satanist or Buddhist in France to justify such symbols. I'm unsure about this, laïcité is not about pretending religion isn't there, we only want to keep it away from the public sphere, as in not being able to "tell" what religion a person believes in (among other things). Church, Mosques and Synagogues are seen too.
