If the Unites Staes government "derives its power from the people" HRC should be president-elect.

In a vast and thus considerably diverse country like US, it's vital that there's balancing of power between the states, which is why one could argue there's need for a system like the electoral collage. While it would motivate more ppl to cast a ballot, popular vote's weakness is that the power would centralize to big cities, encouraging regional preferentialism. If certain regions got a sense that they had no influence and their interests were not protected/addressed to anymore, It would likely compromise the national unity and cause pressure to act at the state level. So, in the end, it would still lead to dissatisfaction and lack of trust & respect for the office as well. Proportional system would be a compromise.
