Don't forget that Brown is also an Ivy. It is just as difficult to get into it as it is to be admitted at Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, or Stanford (which is not an Ivy, but is highly regarded and competitive).
BU and Tufts are great. And so are schools in the UC system, Vandy, NYU, and Georgetown.

What would one need to get into a really pretentious university? I mean, like, Harvard-level.
I'm smart but it's so selective that it seems so hard. What's the secret?

There are several factors to take into account. Don't be discouraged by your GPA or SAT scores alone. Now, if both of them are way below par then you would be wasting your money and effort. But I doubt that would be applicable in your case.
Still, as noted by others, having lots of extracurricular activities (especially if you can mention them in your admissions essay and contextualize them as to why they are meaningful to you as an individual), great letters of recommendation whenever needed, and (again) a KILLER statement will make you stand out in front of other hopefuls.
I believe that they have moved into a
universal college application, so be sure to familiarize yourself with that system.
Also, how long do you have left in HS? Applications are usually due early in January and you need to allow yourself ample time in order to collect all necessary forms, recs, and transcripts. And while a personal statement sounds like an easy essay, you should always allows several weeks between the moment when you start writing it and the deadline for apps. What you write about yourself and your goals is what will sell you to an admissions committee. Dedicate lots of time to it and be not afraid to touch on personal matters/experiences (without making it far too cheesy or sentimental).
Best of luck
