The margin in NC was 173,784 so when you think about it 2020 isn't a stretch so long as lifting voting restrictions brings in votes for Democrats coupled with decreased approval of Trump if the tide turns on him.

1) He's lowkey an outsider. He can say he's never been in the senate (despite losing the race to get in nn) and has limited experience but at least enough to run the country.
2) His pro-gun stance is why a big portion of Trump voters would vote for him so he could definitely win them over on that front. Despite what people say I think a lot of voters choose their candidate based primarily on a single issue, so removing the gun fears for voters will only help his cause.
3) Missouri is a good state for a Democrat to run for president in as it is close enough that it could flip for him if he did well enough and also it's somewhat close in proximity to the rust belt states which could make him more credible to voters there... and that's where the 2020 election will be won or lost. If he can win over the 100k voters that collectively made Trump win MI, WI and PA then it's game, set, match.
4) He's a white male. As sad as it is his white male privilege would help him win votes from more conservative factions.. possibly at the expense of PoC voters but I feel getting Trump out could be enough to energise them in 2020.
He just needs to build up his oratory skills as to take down Trump you're going to have to be able to TALK. Chuck in some negative slogans like "Dump Trump", "The experiment has failed", "Corporate puppet" and "Take out the trash" and you'd have a very good campaign against Trump as all you have to do is act in an inflammatory manner towards him and he'll do the rest.. and his messy behaviours won't fly as well when he's the President in a re-election year.
You make very good points but he wouldn't even be 40 in 2020. I just really don't think America would vote for someone in his 30's to be president.

Frankly we're in between a rock and a hard place then as it's either energise the whites needed to win or energise black voters enough to win and either way it's going to be seen as a fetish candidate to the other voting bloc.

It's easier to be a lazy liberal in a Dem term than a lazy liberal in a conservative term. There won't be any trying to guilt trip black people this time around. They'll get out to vote by themselves.
