As always at this time of year, multiple joints announce what they believe is the word that defines the times.
Well, in reflection of a year that's included Brexit, a heated US election, debates over Syrian refugees and high-profile police shootings, Dictionary.com has chosen 'xenophobia' as its Word of 2016.
In a statement, the online dictionary go-to noted that searches for the word began rising last year, but spiked dramatically after June's decision to leave the European Union. In fact, the figures jumped a mind-blowing 938 percent the day after the vote.
However, the numbers received their biggest growth after President Obama gave a speech in which he described Donald Trump's political rhetoric as "nativism and xenophobia", not populism.
