I might be wrong because I didn't pay attention to marvel movies/comics back in late 00s, but wasn't that the case with Iron man too? didn't RDJ make him popular? the only marvel character I recognized as a little kid was Spidey and I feel like IM's popularity grew after his movies.
with that being said, this is a very good start not only for Strange's character but also for the other new characters that will be introduced in next movies
