I think Madonna started it when she said she rather be dead than be Mariah Carey.

Someone interviewed Madonna asking if she still would wanna be singing "silly love songs" like Mariah carey or something like that and then Madonna said she'd rather kill herself and then Mariah heard "I'd rather kill myself than be Mariah Carey" and said she hadn't paid attention to Madge since 7th grade.
Something like that.

Probably because Mariah isn't a nice person, that's the reason why I don't like her.

I don't recall ever seeing the interview where Madonna said she'd rather kill herself than be Mariah Carey. But she supposedly said a few other things about her in the mid-90s that were not at all complimentary. I think Madonna was still reeling from the backlash and found herself resenting art she didn't consider as challenging performing so much better. She admits that she said and did a lot of things during this time that came from a place of deep anger. I'm sure at this point she's come to respect Mariah as another legend who's survived all of the industry trap doors. She did say in 2008 that she liked Mariah's record, so there's that.

Madonna shaded Mariah in 1994 (Spin interview I think), then again in early 1996. Then Mariah shaded her during the promotional tour for ABMB during Daydream in mid 1996.
