I imagine they'd look at votes even if they don't close til the day off, and when someone has a sizable lead they'll tell the artist they are gonna win it to persuade them to show up. If voting closes in a day, and an artist has 70% of the votes against 4 other artists, it's pretty obvious they're gonna win.
Not necessarily rigging, but just telling the outcome in advance. But I wouldn't be surprised if there was rigging, not like it matters with the AMAs.
