America in the mid-2000s was seeing physical sales die and digital tracks not take off yet.
So radio play determined much of the Hot 100, so I assume "American Idiot" suffered at the hands of most stations not playing a 1) rock song and 2) the lyrical content of the song.
But MTV was huge in the mid-2000s and so the video / song really became iconic.
