Ariana is like...what...3 years into her mainstream career while Gaga is already 8+ years into it?
Gaga has had anything, from #1 hit singles (something Ari has yet to achieve) to massive worldwide stadium tours, from one of the best selling digital songs of all time to countless prestigious awards. She was and still is for millions of people around the world one of the biggest influences of the current age.
What does she have to prove in front of a relative new commer these days? Absolutely nothing.
Who cares if Ari, with her discounted new album, is currently charting above Joanne? It's just something quickly passing, as she will hit the stage at the AMAs in a few days and will for sure overtake her once again.
Is this what she has to prove in front of Ariana? Charting higher with her non-commercial new album on iTunes, 8 years into her career? I don't think so.
And yes, it's obvious for everybody, Ariana is MORE ''HIP'' these days than Gaga. She's the one releasing commercial stuff, featuring rappers on her songs and having a big social presence.

Ariana's album will eventually cross 1.5M pure WW sales. I highly doubt Joanne will be able to pull the same number. On top of that Ariana has two pretty big hits and one moderate hit under her belt
