American Music Awards: The biggest AMA winners ever
Janet Jackson: 11 Wins
Jackson’s 11 trophies span 15 years, including two wins for Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist and two wins for Favorite Soul/R&B Female Artist. She also won the Award of Merit in 2001, 17 years after her brother Michael was presented with the same award (but more on him later).
Stevie Wonder: 11 Wins
Willie Nelson: 12 Wins
Reba McEntire: 15 Wins
McEntire has 10 wins as Favorite Country Female Artist across three different decades, including eight consecutive wins between 1988 and 1996, a record that is in no danger of being toppled anytime soon as her closest competition is Taylor Swift with six wins in the same category.
Lionel Richie: 15 Wins
Among Richie’s wins were three that existed for only one year. In 1985 the AMAs gave out awards specifically for black artists, including categories that today would seem highly problematic, such as Favorite Black Album, Favorite Black Single, and Favorite Black Male. I’m just going to leave that one alone.
Garth Brooks: 17 Wins
Kenny Rogers: 19 Wins
Taylor Swift: 19 Wins
Swift’s collection of AMA trophies includes multiple wins not only as a country artist, but also as a pop and adult contemporary artist. She won the Favorite Female Artist award in all three genres in 2009, and is the only three-time winner of Artist of the Year.
Alabama: 21 Wins
Whitney Houston: 21 Wins
Houston has the distinction of winning the most trophies in a single night, with eight wins surrounding the soundtrack to Houston’s hit film, “The Bodyguard.” She received her final honor, the International Artist Award, in 2009, just three years before her death in 2012.
Michael Jackson: 26 Wins
The King of Pop was also the king of these awards.
Like Houston he won eight of his record 26 trophies in a single night: in 1984 based on the popularity of his landmark album “Thriller.” Jackson also won Artist of the Century in 2002, as well as four posthumous awards following his death in 2009.
