I think the major reason religion has persisted through all these ages is the promise of a life after death, take that away and people wouldn't know what's left.
Perhaps the biggest reveal in the magazine’s interview comes when Shakira admits she lost her religious faith for awhile after a string of disappointments in love.
When talking about her boyfriend, soccer star Gerard Piqué, she said, “I think, if you can prove the existence of God, it can only be proven through love. I even had lost my faith for a while. I was becoming as agnostic. And it was really hard, because I was always very religious, and for a few years, maybe because—it sounds so corny—I was not feeling the love like it was supposed to be, I started to think that there was no God. And suddenly I meet Gerard and the sun comes out.”
I started reading Voltaire (love this man ) and read The Age of Reason by Thomas Paine and drew my conclusions from there but as AvrilLaQueen said I think I've always been skeptical especially at the questions like "why does God allow this or that?" I asked as a kid and were followed by "He knows best".
Omg, you're reading material is actually perfect. I realised early on in my teens and I adored Voltaire a true pioneer when it comes to equality

Woooooooooo these religious homophobes just converted me with their bops

Also because it gives people simple answers which they wanna hear instead of asking questions and think about them deeply. And because religion is taught through generations. Religions represent customs and traditions, and people don't like the change, or abandoning old habits.

Yes, yes, yes and yes. Plus the community feeling it promotes makes it harder for people to think for themselves individually.
Why is it that religion cannot be held to criticism? Why is it that there's little to no checks on the major influencers? Why do people think that an all-mighty and all-knowing and all-seeing perfect being needs constant defending by a mere mortal?

Because people feel personally offended and threatened when you challenge their view of life. It's somewhat understandable, imagine wasting all that time and energy worrying about it only to find out it was all a lie. When you become dependent on god and your religion, anybody challenging your views becomes a vicious attacker, an enemy. That ofc by itself is a selfish outlook on life. As long as religion keeps being an integral part of social structure, there will be people denouncing it.

I know. Reason can never win apparently. It's allegedly the one thing God gave humans but they won't use it.
Actually I prefer to believe once I'm gone I'm gonna become non sentient dust rather than believe I am going to go to hell and burn forever (knowing Christianity I do not fulfill their requirements for eternal salvation or whatever)

Thats true, you barely fulfill my requirements for eternal salvation.

Damn, Mary Mary have the bops. But they are so damn extra when it comes to hating on other people. They can take those shackles and shove them up something.

I just realized that this thread existed. This may become my new hangout.
Can we talk Nietzsche, please? Reading him removed the veil from my eyes.

When I asked my philosophy prof about Nietzsche he just said that he was a crazy man who spouted profound phrases here and there That being said, wasn't his work more a social commentary on people moving away from faith?
She makes some good points against Hillary but Trump is still anti abortion and doesn't believe in climate change and those two imo should be enough to not vote for him
Yeah I'm not saying Trump is great or anything. The point is to me that people on both sides who pretend that the choice in this election was super obvious are in denial about just how ****** their candidates were. But yeah his climate change denial would've been what would've made me vote for Hilary.

Speaking of Christian music. Heard this Christian rock song on Six Feet Under and loved it ever since. The whole album is actually really good.
Music is a completely separate entity from its author. Much like how religion in itself is separate from people that practice it. You can criticize the music while loving the artist or criticize the artist while you love the music. My fave is a bible thumper from the south but it never really bothered me. I actually think Gospel music sounds great and I bop to it too.
I think one of the bigger flaws in religion is the idea that we have to take people's word for it. That we're somehow supposed to feel contented with the fact that we've never seen God and fear the ETERNAL punishment of denying his existence for that very fact that he hasn't physically manifested before our eyes.
You'd think a God who wants constant praise would... idk...maybe make his presence more obvious.
And somehow questioning that aspect of it, makes US naive and foolish. I'm sorry but, I can't SEE God in the leaves, the ocean, and the mountains. I just see the leaves, the ocean, and the mountains. What special goggles do I need to buy?
Nietzsche (good lord that his last name is so hard to spell) was the one who said people leaving religion seemed like a good thing because they just blindly accepted what was spoon-fed to them by the church, but on a second thought many people will replace the few philosophical, simple knowledge they had for nothing. Maybe materialism.
If you think about it there are so many religious and non-religious people who are like that just because of convenience and not because of personal conviction or stopping to think about what all this means. I couldn't get over the paradox of evil as a child. The Sunday school teacher and the church told me God loved me more than anything and he did so unconditionally, but they also told me I would be punished eternally if I didn't reciprocate that love (which DID have conditions--the commandments). It did not make sense to my 6 year old self and it still puzzles me.
