From an earlier post of mine:
Incredible album, energetic, heartfelt, pumping, varied, cold at moments but also hot and sexy.
Extremely poorly promoted, if you think 'Born this Way' had promotion missteps, 'ARTPOP' takes the prize by a landslide. "Applause" had a very decent commercial performance but after "Do What U Want", everything went downhill, still a very sexy single that got an even cooler collab for the remix with a crazy meeting of worlds with Christina Aguilera. At least, Gaga tried to do the album justice with the "G.U.Y." short, still, if promoted well, it could have been bigger than 'Teenage Dream', it had the music and many potential singles.
"Sexxx Dreams" could have been a worldwide smash, it's sexy, sensual, teasing, a bit dark but it's very fun. "Gypsy" is lovely and touching and gets silly fun at the end. "Dope" is very brooding and heartfelt, could have made up for a very dark Gaga music video. "ARTPOP" (song) is very sophisticated and the version she played at Jimmy Fallon really unveiled the song's potential. "Aura" could have totally been the "Telephone" sequel, it had the Tarantino feel. "Venus" is one of Gaga's finest and could have been big with an "Oops!... I Did It Again" inspired video, the bridge is totally hilarious and kinda has a Sailor Moon feel to it. "Swine" is a banger! Very energetic and kinda has a deep undertone that makes it totally cathartic, a MV a la Major Lazer, "Light It Up (Remix)" could have fitted the song with also actual people and performance. I said it many times, "G.U.Y." could have used a very dark/somber video, horror-esque, kinda like zombie movie meets Madonna's "Die Another Day" meets Björk's "Army of Me" meets Die Antwoord "I Fink U Freeky", and it would have been dope that Gaga slightly referenced the latter kinda brushing off their criticism. The rock influences in the "MANiCURE" outro are cool as **** and also the one in the bridge of "Mary Jane Holland" and I just can't compliment "Fashion!" enough for its feel-good vibe and how effortlessly fun it is.
A very complete album, fun from start to finish, "Applause" ends it in a high note with how hard it goes and not a moment is wasted, even its urban and chill moments like "Jewels N' Drugs" and "Donatella" are sharply produced. Made for a high quality sound system and to be played loud, I played this album a lot, it has the fun and accessibility of pop and the irregularity, variety and depth of art. Very colorful, lots of moods, very melodic. Anytime I see someone dragging it, I just ignore it because I had a lot of fun with this album and know pretty well how good it is, "Do What U Want" is one of the sexiest songs ever and a smash that didn't meet its commercial potential.
This one's one of the greatest pop albums I've ever listened and I commend Gaga a lot for making it. I hope now that with 'Joanne' Gaga gives us a full era of singles like 'ARTPOP' should have had and this album gets the recognition it so deserved. I totally love it.
