It may seem bland if you are used to spicy/southern/heavily seasoned food
People in the north don't use much spice because food doesn't spoil as fast
And how would they access red and black pepper, and other exotic spices, back when the basics of the cuisine were formed?

However, garlic and onions are very popular
I love my Russian cuisine

it's healthy, full of vegetables (cabbage alone), and is more basic and natural
