As someone who has worked in Retail, you'd be surprised. The same amount of jobs are filled, it's just less people are expected to do two things at once.
So now there's less strain for staff to take 10 minutes to do what should take 20 mins.
With or without self service, i still had to do the same amount of work. You're only on Registers for a small part of the day no matter where you work (unless you only signed up for that position).
I still had to do the same amount of work, and often, I'd be called to Registers when it's busy and still have to get what I needed to done.
That's why Self Service is a good thing in a lot of ways. Staff are still employed they just have more reasonable time expectations.
