On the other hand, this means voters don't really know what they're voting for since none of the parties will be able to carry out what they want to. They will compromise with each other and in the end do things which no-one voted for.

Every system has pros and cons. The American one works for America and takes into account their unique national history/formation. I say let it be.

Still it's better than the alternative of having a president that only benefits a few states over the others.

ex: Hillary only won about 18 states, 2 of them being California and New York (two of the highest pop states). So imagine if all the votes in Cali and NY pushed her to win...

It would mean the 32 other states are stuck with a president they don't want.

No. That system is perfectly suited for such a big country composed of many federated states. It gives smaller states a say in the affairs of the country and prevents mob rule.

I also think it's odd that you need register first and that it's on a normal workday.
