That's after the way the media handled this election cycle. They should have given all the nominees a fair shake, instead of pretending Bernie didn't exist until he nearly tied her in Iowa and trounced her in NH. Even then, most of the media coverage was about how he couldn't win, about him (an "honorary woman") being sexist because he questioned how qualified a warhawk surrounded by scandal would be, and vague coverage of his "race problem", as if to paint him as somehow racist, when it was simply POC more familiar with Clinton. Not to mention calling every debate as a "win" in Hillary's favor. Oh, and associating him with sexism with "Bernie Bros" a la "Obama Boys"... The fact that he caught up as much as he did, with favorable media coverage pretty much entirely in the form of online media says a lot about what he could've done if they didn't shower Clinton (a faulty candidate) and the republican primary with attention.
The latter is exactly why the blame lies entirely on the media, and the DNC which could have changed the narrative. All this attention they gave to republicans from way back in the Trump/Cruz/Rubio/Bush/Kasich/Carson/Fiorina days gave republicans so much time to get motivated and mobilized. They tried to act like a primary on the democratic side wasn't even going on, instead of giving some attention to Sanders/O'Malley/Webb/whatever and seeing what the American people would decide. The democratic party is tone-deaf, and they won't take anything meaningful away from this, besides pushing Hillary even harder in 2020, and being even more condescending and un-inclusive to new young voters.
