on 20 january (21 january if the 20th lands on a sunday), that is when the president who is elected on election day is actually sworn into office, also known as
inauguration day.
that means a president's term would be from, for example, 20 january 2020 to 20 january 2024, presuming the president doesn't die/get impeached/retire/does anything that would cut their term short. and on 20 january 2024, that's the same day the president who won election day in 2023 is inaugurated into office.
the USA does not go into presidential limbo between election day and inauguration day
