A gay Ugandan man has told how he was subjected to torturous anal examinations to prove his sexuality, in a country notorious for its violent homophobia.
The man, named only as Mukasa, said he was woken by a mob banging spoons on metal cooking pots, while shouting “out with the homos” and “the homos are in there”.
The 21-year-old said he and his male friend were dragged out of his Kampala home and beaten. The vicious punishment is just the latest example of forced anal examinations in the east African country. "We opened the door, and there were police and people everywhere,” Mukasa said. “The local councilman was there, yelling ‘Out with the homos! You are scaring people in the area’.
“They took us to a clinic in Kampala where we were examined. “It is so painful. The doctor puts a machine up your rectum. It hurts so much, and there is blood.”
Mukasa also said he could not walk the street, collect medicine or claim benefits “because I am a homosexual”.
Uganda is one of 36 countries in Africa where homosexuality is illegal and one of eight countries globally where there is evidence of forced anal examinations to prove homosexuality.
It's so unfortunate that countries where human rights are violated regularly have the highest birth rates. We're literally putting hurdles in front of our advancement as a species.
African leaders are the Pitts, these people would rather attack and berate homos before they fix the actual fundamental issues in their countries. Ugh. Embarrassing.
This is disgusting and terrible, it broke my heart to hear the painful bit and the bleeding , also police breaking into your house for sexuality reasons, its scary. Obama should condemn this and quickly give them asylum.
Still the irony of this all. Is Uganda equally supports TRUMP,yet his racism.
but...why anal probing? it says to "prove homosexuality", but that honestly raises more questions than it answe- ...you know, i don't think asking these questions is really going to get me anywhere anyway
They need sanctions. Stop the aid that goes to those African countries and let's see how fast they change their tune.
Violation of homosexual rights is not enough good reason to sanction a nation. The UN has passed a resolution that declares and protects every nation's autonomy and sovereignty. Each nation has a right to implement its own laws and no other nation should be allowed to subvert them. It is up to the people to bring about the change they see fit. If the people disapprove of their country's laws, then it's their place to act. It's not the UN's or any other country's place to act opposite of that nation. Countries with homophobic laws have generally homophobic people themselves that support those laws anyway. Sanctions are illegal in cases like this and they hurt the common people more than their leaders.
