A smash isn't just measured by chart peaks. Stairway to Heaven didn't chart until 2007 and has only gone top 10 in two countries but it's one of the biggest smashes of all-time because of its recurrent stats and attached album sales. Likewise, it is one of the greatest classics of all-time.
However, my point was that while "Kawa No Nagare No Youni" might be Japan's greatest classic of all-time, it isn't considered one worldwide (unfortunately) because it's unknown outside of certain parts of Asia.
Likewise, Taylor's huge country hits can't be considered global classics when they're not remembered outside of the U.S., let alone really even known.
