The violent end to Constable Jennings's response to a domestic disturbance on June 12, 2005 was narrated to the court by Crown Prosecutor John Allen in his opening address to the jury.
Constable Jennings, 43, and Senior-Constable Leonie Scott, were sent to the Beach Parade unit, Maroochydore, Sunshine Coast, Queensland Australia, in response to a domestic violence call by Kevin Hughes. There they met an aggressive woman only wearing a towel. Maria Klaus believed to be Kevin Hughes' partner had just finished shower when the officers got to their home.
The couple started another round of arguement initiated by Klaus which resulted in Jennings stepping between them. Klaus reportedly grabbed a three-year-old girl in the house and swung her to the floor behind her. The child got up and Klaus repeated the action warranting the intervention of Jennings.
"Klaus started to punch and kick and that sort of stuff and the towel just got dragged off . . . she was wet and she was naked and I couldn't get a grip anywhere," Jennings told the Maroochydore District Court. He was giving evidence on the first day of trial against Maria Klaus, 38, for assault of a police officer. As the officer lost control Klaus bent down biting him on the penis apparently to get even for seeing her naked the court was told.
"I felt an excruciating pain on the end of my penis and as I looked down she had her head over the top of my groin and she was biting," Constable Jennings told the court. The two officers eventually handcuffed naked Klaus as she rejected all plea to put on clothes the court heard.
Klaus entered a not guilty plea.
