I was in a private catholic school in Mexico. We wouldn't celebrate it in the school as we took the day off. the school just decorated days before with colorful flags but inside the school there would be no actual celebration.

we actually have many tourist that come just to celebrate it

we encourage them to celebrate it and paint their faces because it's a way to pass down our culture yet educate it at the same time.

We as Mexicans aren't close minded enough to yell "cultural appropriation" at the first sight of someone engaging in our traditions. Our culture is beautiful, we embrace it, celebrate it, and share it.

Taking a marginalized group's cultural pratice and imposing it as some kind of national holiday (it wasn't before) while actively discriminating against indigenous peoples. Yep, that's appropriation.

That's why I think it's not accurate to ask Mexicans permission anyway when the holiday itself is stolen from a group of people that do not quite identify as 'Mexicans'
