Can Mexicans themselves even celebrate it though? It was a celebration of a very specific group of indigenous peoples from Oaxaca. The mass-marketed holiday is justa distortion of those people's tradition

Haven't seen any white person ever celebrate it. They just like souvenirs, sugar skulls and paint their faces.

omg, catholics here do celebreate that thing about people "day of the dead" on November 1st, meanwhile I prefer celebrating Halloween which is on October 31st, but these religious freaks say it's "American Satanism"

it is not a "sacred" holiday
we actually have many tourist that come just to celebrate it

we encourage them to celebrate it and paint their faces because it's a way to pass down our culture yet educate it at the same time.

We as Mexicans aren't close minded enough to yell "cultural appropriation" at the first sight of someone engaging in our traditions. Our culture is beautiful, we embrace it, celebrate it, and share it.

it's supposed to be fun and full of joy. At least in Guadalajara that's the way it's depicted.
We'd even fill up altars with beers and cookies and candies jewelry.

yeah, I looked it on google and they paint their faces as colorful skeletons which people don't do it here

yeah, I don't remember how the story went when I was a child

but it was something along the line of making the dead feel at home which is why people painted their faces

it was a weird yet interesting story, i'd have to ask my parents what it was
my grandma(rip) was the one who would tell it to me

The Day of the Dead you celebrated is the elementary school version where the teacher assigns you the making an altar for a family member who passed away, reads a wikipedia entry to the class and everyone buys sweet bread and sugar skulls to share

Nothing wrong with that, but it is also a real holiday still practiced by people. I don't know how those people feel about the commodification of their culture, especially when they're otherwise discriminated against.

Of course! We love anyone that appreciates our culture. Most of us don't believe in cultural appropriation or whatever.

I was in a private catholic school in Mexico. We wouldn't celebrate it in the school as we took the day off. the school just decorated days before with colorful flags but inside the school there would be no actual celebration.

Yes. Halloween is an Irish pagan festival and tons of countries celebrate it. Same thing.
